Autumn Lane
Suri Akiyoshi
Born in 1922 in Keijo (Seoul), Korea, under the rule of the former Japanese Empire, to Japanese parents. He was self-taught in art, but his talent did not flourish during the war and its aftermath. After returning to Japan following the war, he continued his pursuit of his own unique fantastical beauty while taking on commercial work such as providing illustrations for magazines to make a living. During his lifetime, he never held solo exhibitions and remained a solitary figure, keeping his distance from the art world.
Tatsuhiko Shibusawa called his work "popular surrealism" and praised him, saying, "Completely cut off from the world of art and art dealers, he single-mindedly spun his own dreams." He died in 1981.
